We are all used to the term upper case and lower case, but do you know what the term means and where it comes from?

To answer this question, we have to delve back into the past and the early days of printing and a point where anything had to be done letter by letter. This was clearly very time-consuming, but that is not why we developed these two terms.

Instead, it is all to do with the way in which the printer organized his print shop so he could find what he was looking for in as short a period of time as possible. Ultimately, upper case letters were stored in the upper part of his case, or the upper shelf in some instances, while the lower-case letters were stored, yep you guessed it, on the lower case or the lower shelf.

When you discover that this is the reason as to why these terms exist, it does then make you wonder about what else it may have been called if printers centuries ago had not been so intelligent as to come up with this rather simple solution.
