Money. We all want more of it due to the way in which it changes our lives, but have you ever taken the time to find out where this all-important word comes from? As with a number of things in the English language, we have to go back to the time of the Romans to discover the root, and in doing so we see that they were pretty clued up with what they were doing when it came to coming up with the names for things.
In the Roman period, they would strike all of their coins in a temple that was dedicated to the Goddess Juno Moneta. She was also the Goddess for marriage and women, but her last name would then be associated with the concept of money, as well as us taking the concept of coins being ‘minted’ from the same source.
