In the world today, we are all pre-occupied with the concept of food having a best before or a sell-by date and we get panic-stricken when we think that we might have strayed over that date. However, it turns out that just eating something that is a few days older than it should be is nothing compared to this piece of food that had to be past its best.
Back in 1984, a group of paleontologists decided that they were going to make a stew from some buffalo meat that had been frozen for approximately 30,000 years. They thawed it, cooked it and did indeed eat it, with them describing it as having quite a tough feel to it and a taste that was surprisingly rather like mushrooms.
They all reported no ill-effects from having eaten it, so it does show that we might be taking things a bit too far when it comes to thinking that we have to slap a date on every single thing that we eat.
