In 2010, a woman from Vigo, Spain, made a startling accusation: that she was the owner of the sun. Angeles Duran had applied for ownership of the sun after learning that an American had made similar clams on the moon and Mars. There is already an official treaty, the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, that prevents governments from claiming ownership of celestial bodies, but there is nothing that legally keeps individuals from staking claim. Duran asserted that she was issued a document that stated that she was the owner of the sun and stated that she knew the laws surrounding the idea and met with lawyers, who backed her idea. She says that anyone else could have claimed the right, but that she was simply the first to think of it. Duran wanted to charge “rent” for everyone who used the sun’s energy, and said that she would distribute the earnings amongst the government, a pension fund, charity, and herself.
