Metallica is amongst the most popular bands in the world. In addition to playing sold-out shows all over the United States, Asia, and Europe, the band set out on another mission: to play a show on every continent. With one continent left to check off, in 2013, the members of Metallica traveled to Antarctica to play a show in a small dome for just 120 people. The audience was made of up research scientists from countries like Russia, China, Poland, and Chile, as well as several contest winners from Latin America.
The band had to play the show without any amplification in order to preserve the fragile exterior environment, and the sound was transmitted through headphones. Metallica’s ten-song show was the second rock concert to ever take place on Antarctica, the first being performed by a team of scientists that formed a band called Nunatak.
