Dogs are not only a man’s best friend, they’re also far superior when it comes to smelling. Their sense of smell is estimated to be somewhere between 10,000 and 100,000 times better—or more acute—than ours. To put it into perspective, if you dilute one teaspoon of sugar in a million gallons of water, dogs would be able to detect it. While humans have about six million olfactory receptors in their noses, dogs have upwards of 300 million. It’s no wonder dogs are often used to help sniff out drugs and explosives.
