Back in 1889, the sport of rugby was still relatively new but it was also an era where having manners and not cheating was seen as being the correct thing to do. It was also the year when England played New Zealand at rugby for the first time, and it led to some real controversy.
During the match, the shorts of a player for England were ripped. In order to change them, and protect his decency, the New Zealand players formed a circle around him to give him some privacy. At the same time, a player from England took the opportunity to pick up the ball and score as the opposition were otherwise occupied.
Amazingly, the score was given but what is astonishing is that this, is not the unsportsmanlike act that we are talking about.
Instead, the New Zealand team decided to ask for an apology from the referee for allowing the score to stand and it was that act that the England team found to be offensive. In return, they then demanded an apology for what they believed to be unsportsmanlike behavior from New Zealand even though for many it was them that caused the issue in the first place even though they never saw anything wrong with it.
