An elder from the Adnyamathanha, an indigenous Australian tribe, was exploring gorges in the area. As luck would have it, the man, Clifford Coulthard, has to use the bathroom, so he searched for an empty space to “do his business.” The area he came across was more than just a prime location for going to the bathroom in private, it was proof of the earliest human settlement in Australia.
The site, known as Warratyi, offers proof that there were settlers in the area 49,000 years ago, which is 10,000 years earlier than scientists had previously thought. The rock shelter had a blackened roof, which tipped Coulthard off to its significance. Scientists have since been able to recover over 4,000 artifacts and 200 bone fragments. Not too shabby for a bathroom trip, huh?
