For many people, the idea of graffiti is a modern-day issue that ends up leaving a blight on the landscape. However, the act of adding some strange words or phrase to a piece of public property is older than you may think.
Some of the earliest examples of graffiti date back 2000 years and can still be seen even today. To do so, you need to go to Pompeii in Italy, and if you pay close attention to the walls of the buildings that still stand, then you will see some ancient graffiti that certainly has a different appeal than the modern equivalent.
Aside from people writing the almost customary note telling others that they were there, you will also find graffiti that is from a wife saying that she is not going to sell her husband. Now, that is not the kind of thing that you would see today, so perhaps ancient graffiti was far more advanced, at least in thought, than what we are now capable of.
