Adelia Trujillo was an independent woman living in Mora, New Mexico, in 2001. Despite being 93 years old, she walked without a cane, and she still had the spunk she was known for. For obvious reasons, her family figured that, should anything happen to her, it would likely be a result of her old age. In a cruel twist of fate, Trujillo died on August 18, 2001. How? A 250-pound bear broke into her house and killed her. This was the first death by a bear in New Mexico in at least a century. It is estimated that about 45 people were killed by black bears in North America over the course of the last century, making it an average of less than one person per year.
