Cheese has been a favorite dairy product for nearly 4,000 years, when people started processing milk from their animals. Today, over 1,770 kinds of cheese exist. Beyond your basic American, mozzarella, Swiss, feta, cheddar, parmesan, and provolone cheeses, there are tons of cheeses most people have never even heard of. Some of these not-so-popular cheeses include Adelost, a blue cheese from Sweden, Carrot Rebel, a carrot-flavored cheese from Austria, Grana Padano, a hard cheese from Italy, and Prairie Tomme, a sheep’s milk cheese with a nutty flavor from Missouri.
For some strange cheese names, check out Table Rock, an artisan cheese from Oregon, Nut Rebel, a sweet cow’s milk cheese from Austria, Big Woods Blue, a firm cheese from Minnesota, and Cornish Smuggler, a cheddar-style cheese from England. Xynotyro, a hard, Greek cheese, is the only variety of cheese to start with the letter “X”. There is only one type of cheese, Goutu, that originates in Swaziland, and one type, Paneer, that originates in Bangladesh.
