Nowadays, the lobster is regarded by many as being quite posh and expensive food with restaurants charging a fortune to its diners for a range of dishes where lobster is the main ingredient. However, that is a complete turnaround from how the humble lobster used to be viewed.
If you go back in time to before World War II, then the delicacy that the lobster is was actually referred to as being the cockroach of the sea. Now, that is hardly a term that would make you think that it was seen as being a delicacy, but then that is because it was synonymous with the poor.
In history, lobster was often eaten by prisoners, slaves, and those in the lowest echelons of society whereas it is now viewed as being at the opposite end of the social spectrum. It was not until after World War II that attitudes towards the lobster changed and suddenly prisoners were unable to get their lobster.
