This is going to sound very strange, but the rather humble fig may not be as pleasant or as nice as it likes to make you think. In fact, there are times where a fig can go from being a vegan-based food source to a non-vegan food source, and that in itself is completely strange.
But then, how can a food fluctuate in this way? Well, it seems that the fig is rather different in its approach to growing, and it is less picky when it comes to how it is able to get its food.
The entire issue results when the fig plant is pollinated by a fig wasp. When the wasp lands to do the dirty deed, the plant actually traps the wasp, and enzymes contained within the plant break down the wasp and basically devour it, using the wasp itself as a food source. According to the strict rules that are associated with vegan food groups, this does mean that it is not vegan, but then you have to know if it has managed to eat any wasps as it grew.
